Application of Modes and Scales can't be talked without understanding the concept of Chord Substitution.

For your Cmaj 7 chords, you have lots of Scales and Modes to improvise with.
This will make improvisation not boring and you feel like not ending the music.

When improvising on your Cmaj 7 chords, your fourth should not be emphasised

You at the option of improvising with your G major scale which is equivalent to your C lydian mode

Also, E minor scale could also be used (E Aeolian/ E Dorian)

You could also try B minor scale (B Dorian/ B Aeolian)
